Letter from the Ambassador to "The Point"

Jakarta, 29 November 2006

Mr. Ibrahim G. Zakir
Chief Editor
The Point

Dear Mr. Zakir,

The Point published an article on 24 November about the Australian Embassy’s new initiative to improve visa services for Indonesians wanting to visit Australia, “Aussie Visa Now Faster, Easier to Get’, p. 2. The Australian Visa Application Centre - at Plaza Abda, Jalan Sudirman - opened on 20 November and has already received more than 1800 visa applications from Indonesian tourists, business people and students.

The article referred to an Indonesian who stated he experienced a delay in the approval of his Australian student visa application last year. The Embassy has tried unsuccessfully to contact this person to obtain more information about this claim.

The Australian Embassy received almost 4500 student visa applications last year. The vast majority of these applications were approved within the standard processing time of 10 working days. A small minority of applications take longer than average to process. This is often due to those applicants providing incomplete applications.

Many Indonesian student visa applicants are now choosing to apply for their visas online via select E-Visa education agents, making the application process even quicker and easier than ever. The average processing time for online applications is only 7 working days.

We are proud of the good visa service we offer to clients. However we know we can always make improvements. We encourage clients to provide feedback via the Australian Visa Application Centre (info@vfs-au-id.com, tel: 514 01590 - 91) or the Australian Embassy Immigration Section (visas.immijkt@dfat.gov.au, fax: 2550 5695, tel: 2550 5700 2-4pm Monday to Thursday).

Yours sincerely,

Bill Farmer
