Direct Aid Program
Australian Embassy, Jakarta

What is the Direct Aid Program?
The Australian Embassy operates a small grants scheme known as the Direct Aid Program (DAP), under the authority of the Australian Ambassador to Indonesia. The primary objective of DAP is to promote sustainable community development initiatives that help communities boost their living standards.

What groups can receive funding from the Direct Aid Program?
DAP funds are made available for community groups and non-government organisations (NGOs) engaged in development activities on a not-for-profit basis. Each financial year the Direct Aid Program selects a priority area for development funding. The committee is expected to announce the priority area for the 2007/2008 financial year in late August 2007 and will begin assessing new applications at this time.

What size projects may be proposed?
Projects which focus on small scale infrastructural improvements will be favourably considered. In previous years the Direct Aid Program has worked successfully with community groups and NGO’s to renovate school classrooms, extend community health clinic facilities and build durable clean water pumps at the village level. Applicants may wish to consider their proposed budgets in the context and scale of these previously successful projects.

Do all proposed projects receive funding?
DAP assesses more than 300 proposals per year and the standard of proposals continues to be very high. Regretfully the Direct Aid Program has a limited funding budget and a large number of these proposals have to be rejected. So that the process of assessing DAP proposals remains fair, the Australian Embassy DAP Committee requests that all applicants submit complete application forms, budgets and implementation plans.

What kinds of project are most likely to receive DAP funding?
Projects should have a clear objective, show a demonstrated need and be financially transparent. The Direct Aid Program favours projects where recipients have made/are making a significant contribution themselves in labour or administrative costs. Projects should be completed in a time frame of up to 12 months and should be discrete in nature.

An Example of a Project Previously Funded by the Direct Aid Program

Project Name: Seaweed Development Project (East Rote)
Group: Civil Society Communities (CSC)
Aim: Create employment opportunities for isolated communities via the
development of small scale seaweed development enterprises.
Funding Amount: Rp. 56.400.000
Implementation: Funds were used by CSC to establish 10 social committees tasked with the responsibility to utilise funding to develop seaweed development systems.
Benefits: Employment opportunities created for 40 people and more than 2000 became indirect beneficiaries of the scheme through the boost to East Rote’s regional economy.
