Indonesia-Australia Contemporary Arts in Yogya

A stunning collection of multidisciplinary works by emerging contemporary artists from the Pacific region, who are currently living and working in Melbourne, Australia, are now on display in Yogyakarta until 27 June.

The exhibition is called Meleponi Pasifika, part of Footscray Community Arts Centre (FCAC) project called “FCAC heartsJogja”, a joint Australia- Indonesia contemporary arts project between FCAC, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Contemporary Pacific Arts Festival (CPAF) and Yogyakarta artists.

The Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Greg Moriarty, said Meleponi Pasifika is part of the Embassy’s busy Arts and Cultural Program 2014 and was also supported by the Australia Indonesia Institute.

“This project demonstrates the strength of people-to-people connections between Australia and Indonesia. It shows how arts and culture can be used to deepen professional and personal ties,” Ambassador Moriarty said.

“Personal and cultural relationships add ballast to the Australia-Indonesia relationship. I hope this project signals the beginning of enduring creative relationships between the Australian artists and Indonesian communities involved,” Ambassador Moriarty said.

Meleponi Pasifika features works such as digital pieces, works on paper, woven pieces of everyday objects and sculptural works. Throughout June, FCAC and CPAF representative artists will be teaming up with Jogjakarta artists and cultural organisations.

It was curated by Jacob Tolo and features the work of Kirsten Lyttle, Lisa Hilili Salote Tawale, Taloi Havini, Torika Bolatagici and Tama TK Favell. The project also includes an installation, performance, artist talk and workshops.

The Australian Embassy’s Arts and Cultural Program 2014 runs from March through to November and includes concerts, visual art exhibitions, dance, literature, fashion, sport and a science and innovation roadshow. The program also includes arts residencies and exchanges involving artists from both countries.

The Arts and Cultural Program 2014 is supported by the Australian Government through the Australian International Cultural Council, an initiative of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

The Arts and Cultural Program 2014 is generously supported by the ANZ Bank, the Australia-Indonesia Institute, Queensland University of Technology, Curtin University, Deakin University, Ernst and Young, Flinders University, Macquarie University, the University of New South Wales, the University of Queensland and the University of Tasmania.
